167-168 High Street
History
No167
In 1900 once the block had been rebuilt after the street widening the building was recorded as Nelson and Company, who were Tea Merchants. Recorded in 1932 in the Kelly's Directory it had Stebbings Bakery operating from the building, it was run by Mr L. G. Wagnell. In 1952 the Bakery had been renamed Stebbing's Cake Shop run by Mrs. E. M.Reynolds. The phone book has it as follows: - "High Class Pastry Cook's and Confectioners". By the 1960's the Citizen's Advice Bureau had moved in. By 2016, No167 was Sgt. Peppers Restaurant.
No168
No168 in the 1st picture is the portion of Sgt Peppers Restaurant where the entrance is located. It has been located on the site since 1982 and everyone who is reading this text must have been there for a meal at one point in their life. I personally like the burgers. In the 1932 Kelly's Directory a Mr R. Jewell was in business as a hairdresser, but by the 1940's the shop had passed to Mr Norman Giles. He was a Ladies hairdresser. Moving on to the 1950's, Giles and Ramsey have moved in and were carrying on the tradition and ran the shop as you guessed it, Ladies hairdresser's.
