Workmen are busy taking down the roof of the Triangle Sails, and have started to saw down the metal framework.

So far, the trees are still standing.

Lowestoft Town Council intends to improve the area by removing the sails, the structure, and two of the trees. They intend to replace the trees with other, smaller trees.

The Triangle Sails have long been the subject of criticism by locals, not least because they wouldn't keep the rain out, which meant their use as shelter for market stalls was unsatisfactory.. From time to time the sails themselves became the playground of youngsters, who seemed to enjoy the danger (or perhaps they didn't realise the danger).

However, others rather liked them, with their echoes of spars and rigging and triangular sails of drifters and trawlers.

The trees tend to be seen differently. A popular petition and anecdotal evidence suggests most can't see the point of removing the trees, on safety or any other grounds.
