123 High Street
History
No123 or Connaught House was built in 1814 as a private house but by 1850 the building had become the National Provincial bank. Moving on to 1900 the building was leased by the owner Ernest Fortescue Preston to the Church of England Incorporated Society who provided accommodation for the homeless in Lowestoft. In 1910 the building was sold by Ernest Preston to the Mayor, Alderman and Burgesses of the Borough of Lowestoft for £1400 and soon after it became a church home for girls. In the 1920's the building became the Lowestoft Borough Schools Clinic and the Mother and Child Welfare Clinic. In 1972 the Council sold Connaught House to Durrant's the Fruiterers who sold the building to Star Estates who in-turn developed the building into eight offices, one of which in 1983 was The Ferryshop, travel agent. Present day the building is flats.
