A Season of Bird Boxes
First Light has come up with a smashing idea to celebrate nature, birds, travel and Lowestoft – First Flight, A Season of Bird Boxes.
Lotta birds round here, some of them intimidatingly large, as we know, all the year round. We're also often first landing place for bird visitors throughout the year. They too often come to nest and breed. We're surrounded by great habitats – Oulton Marsh, Carlton Marsh, the river valleys, Haddiscoe Island – but urban landscapes are important, too. We can help our dinosaur friends, and ourselves, with bird boxes and by creating gardens that attract them and their food.
So First Light has brought together artists, crafters, schoolchildren and local businesses, and soon over 3000 – I'm told – lovingly created bird boxes will be gracing The Triangle Market Place, Compass Street, East Point Pavilion, London Road South and Kensington Gardens.
Local art groups enthusiastically participating include Lowestoft Arts Centre, Easterly Artists, Craft Co, and schools include Ormiston Denes and St Mary's Primary School. Pakefield Men's Shed is on the case, too.
Right now you can spot some of the artists' superb creations, made from a of myriad materials, in Compass Street pocket park, the Triangle under the sails, and south Lowestoft.
Next weekend - 26th and 27th June - the several thousand other bird boxes will be on display. It should be amazing.
