What do do with all that soft plastic packaging
– Tesco makes a start
A lot of plastic packaging is rigid. A high percentage of rigid plastic can be put in your blue bin.
But a lot of it is film of one sort or another. This is NOT for the blue bin.
Things are changing.
Tesco gathers up used film carrier bags at its store collection points. I have discovered you can add quite a lot different packets and packaging to the same collection point.
Anything that has this label (this is from Young's Scampi) you can collect at home, then when you go to Tesco, pop them into the Carrier Bag Collection Point.
And this includes our local Tesco's. “I can confirm that the packaging in the image [above] is made of PE, so it can be added to our carrier bag recycling points found at the front of stores.” (from an email from Tesco Stakeholder Enquiries 10th March 2021).
Tesco have just announced they are 'rolling out' an enhanced programme of collection points for a wider range of these soft film plastics. They claim also to be pushing through a vigorous campaign to reduce packaging in general, and make sure the packaging that is used is more easily recycled. The programme is starting in the southwest of the country.
I have emailed other supermarkets to see what they are doing.
