Many streets suffered heavy losses during the two World Wars but one of the most affected was the High Street itself. Class meant nothing so we lost sons and daughters of solicitors and butchers. Book (free) for our launch event 13/4 2pm

Piers

You go beneath some scaffolding, through a couple of doors, turn left and suddenly there's a different vista in front of you. Fairy lights, huge Desmond Baldry local landscapes, there's Books and Prints, an array of tables. Even a real piano. A counter. And quite likely, a smiling Piers. It all draws you in.

The Grit is an inviting place, which is odd as it's housed inside a brutal fortress County Court constructed in 1989, then closed twenty seven years later.

Cherry Picker Picks Sail

Workmen are busy taking down the roof of the Triangle Sails, and have started to saw down the metal framework.

So far, the trees are still standing.

Lowestoft Town Council intends to improve the area by removing the sails, the structure, and two of the trees. They intend to replace the trees with other, smaller trees.

A big thank you to ‘Med Max’ who was kind enough to donate his skills to repairing a damaged photo of George Daley (a marine on the ill fated H.M.S Prince of Wales). Max, a commercial graphic designer, has been using PhotoShop to restore peoples treasured memories since 2020, when one of his friends asked if he could fix his damaged old photos. More of his work can be seen here or email Max

North Lowestoft Men's Shed is gradually transforming the bit of land to the west of Lowestoft Central Station.

Our steel garden shed is due to arrive on 5th July. Then we've got to construct it.

We're creating the foundations next week.

We've cleared some brambles, excavated industrial archaeology, sourced some pallets, and generally made progress.

The land was originally – 1900 to 1950's – a siding, dedicated to loading and unloading livestock – cattle and pigs.

“Lowestoft has of late assumed so prominent a status, not merely among the new watering-places which have acquired more or less popularity within the last few years, chiefly owing to the extension of facilities for railway travelling, but as the entrepôt of the important traffic now being developed between Northern Europe and this country, that a " Guide" to it should be prefaced with something a little more discursive than a purely local introduc-With this view. Image: High Street closed

On Saturday 3rd June 2023 disaster hit Lowestoft's High Street, but all is not doom and gloom.

145, High Street suffered a crippling fire. At least two people were rescued by firefighters. Nine fire appliances of various types attended. Electricity was turned off for part of the High Street for a few hours. Not only did the flat-dwellers lose their homes, but High Street Furnishings lost their shop and store.

The fire destroyed the top floor, and severe water damage affected the rest of the building.
