How Do I.. Tooltips
In order to make adding content as easy as possible we have added tooltips for each field. In the first instance theit is a singe sentence that may prove enough, at the end of which is a link to a paragraph going int more details [and maybe a video link?]
Setting up a Local host
Firstly go to XAMPP Installers and Downloads for Apache Friends and download latest Windows version.
Install and accept all defaults
pin the resulting Xampp control panel to the Task bar
Apache > config > php.ini
change ;extension=gd TO extension=gd > save > stop/start Apache
IN browser go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ > databases > create > say 'test01'
go to https://www.drupal.org/download > download latest zip to C:\xampp\htdocs
Google features
Many aspects of these website templates are enhanced by 'free' features that Google provides, BUT despite costing nothing they insist on the account being linked to a credit card :-(.
For this project (rather that asking local teams to link their card - we need their enthusiasm not their money) I got a seperate credit card and then dropped the limit to just £150.
animated gif overlay idea
Could we add animated lights to a street stroll?
Archive in WARC format
WARC (Web ARChive) is a file format specifically designed for web archives. It's primarily used for the long-term preservation of digital data.
Nottingham University Digital Research has an excellent tutorial to set this up once installed on your pc run one of these commands
For a static html version
StreetStrolls in ANY direction!
StreetStrolls in ANY direction!
Our new template can handle showing each side of the street
So facing WEST side https://manystories.org/full/strollala/ala01
facing East Side https://manystories.org/full/strolldla/dla01
or even facing north https://manystories.org/full/strollalo/alo06
Social Media
We have had great success engaging the local community through Facebook. Getting stories, photos and volunteers. Firstly we asked all our team members to:
Logon to / join Facebook, then Search > [your town/village name], History, heritage etc > Groups tab and then join (consider joining the general groups as well)
Mailchimp
A great free way to keep your team and supporters regularly informed of how your heritage project is going.
Just go to Mailchimp.com and sign up, for organisation use your project name (you can change it later)
If nothing else if you go to Audience > Sign Up Forms > manage forms you can get a subscribe link to add to website and social media etc
There are lots of helpful videos as well
EXIF Metadata Idea
Wouldn't it be great if the photo archive digital images that we curate for future generations contains MORE than just the image.
When a smartphone takes a photo it often contains metadata on
- GPS Location
- Device
- ISO
- Date etc
If we could add this information to OLD photos (as we scan/photograph) them this could be useful.
as an example
Tags and Taxonomy
An important way to link content is heirachical taxonomy
eg
