Buildings

Lowestoft still has many lovely buildings, despite having lost a few in the wars.

Renovate

Not sure what the intention is but good to see some TLC happening!

Ness Point Powerstation October 2022

Tuesday's warning that gas shortages in this coming winter might lead to interrupted electricity supplies – that is, power cuts – reminded me of Lowestoft's own new power station.

Trees and Sails

The Triangle Market area is graced by an infamously iconic architectural landmark we know as The Triangle Sails.

Immediately in front of them are some trees, planted around 30 years ago.

About five days ago temporary fences were erected in around the trees and the area below the sails.

Immediately, rumours started to circulate that the Town Council were about to chop down the trees.

On 27th September Lowestoft Town Council had voted to remove the sails, and work out ways to “...make it more visually appealing.” (LTC Minutes,27 Sept 2022 Full Council Meeting).

Triangle Trees 10th November 2022

Reported rumours that Triangle Trees were for the chop turn out to be true – sort of.

LO&N published on Friday 11th a story which noted rumours that the four trees in front of the Sails were coming down.

We wrote that clearly this was unlikely, as Lowestoft Town Council (LTC) recognised Climate Emergency and was an Earth Protector.

We had asked LTC what was going on.

Now, we have more facts.

Idea two

Revised (unofficial) local idea for train station improvement generates much interest on social media. Particularly in the light of previous official submission (bottom image)

it uses the towers that were originally on the front (Denmark Road) to soften the effect of the steel and glass extension

North Lowestoft Men's Shed is gradually transforming the bit of land to the west of Lowestoft Central Station.

Our steel garden shed is due to arrive on 5th July. Then we've got to construct it.

We're creating the foundations next week.

We've cleared some brambles, excavated industrial archaeology, sourced some pallets, and generally made progress.

The land was originally – 1900 to 1950's – a siding, dedicated to loading and unloading livestock – cattle and pigs.

Samuel Peto built the railway connecting Lowestoft to the rest of the railway system, thus fulfilling his promise that

"fish landed in the early catches would get through to Manchester in time for high tea".
