76 High Street pic , CREDIT:Crispin Hook 76 In 1865 the shop was run by Robert Smith as a Provisions Dealer, by 1900 the shop had become John List shop and he specialised as a Sewing Machine repairer and agent for Singers. The Kelly's directory shows that Miss Dorothy M Watson ran it as a Chemist and by 2016 it is Admiral Tees. / We are able to print or embroider onto any number of garments no order is too small or too large. / 3 May, 2025

(His brother William ran the other shop in Tanning street) By 1932 the Kelly's Directory has the Singer Sewing Machine Co at the address, but by 1967 G and PJames was running his Ladies Hairdressers from this address. / 4 April, 2025

133 High Street CREDIT:ODriscolls Annual , pic 133 High Street In 1865 No133 was a butcher's shop run by William Rackham who also had a branch in Kirkley but by the time the 2nd picture was taken in the 1880's it had passed to Benjamin Saunders and Sons. The shop continued as a butcher's well into the 1960's until it became the Go-Go's Coffee Bar and Cafe but by the time the 3rd picture was taken the shop had become J and M Cards. / Madeleine and John welcome you to an interesting world of furniture and curiosities  / 2 February, 2025
71 High Street 71 , pic 71 , RMA In 1865 William Hines ran his Fishmonger and Fruiterer business from No71 but as on the previous property sometime in the 1900's the shop was knocked through to No70 when Charles Fry ran his Outfitters from both addresses. / 2 February, 2025
70 High Street 70 , Pic 70 In 1865 John Raymond Dye ran his Watchmakers business from No70 but by 1900 the shop was knocked through to No71 and the shop belonged to Charles Fry who ran his Tailor, Hatter and Outfitter shop. In the Kelly's Directory of 1932 No70-71 was a Perambulator dealer (baby carriages) and it carried on till around the 1960's. / Trophies medals and engraved plaques. 8 High Street 47 , pic 65 No. 8 High Street seems to have been created, probably in the early 1800s, by sub-dividing a larger house into 3 smaller units. No. 8 only contained 4 main rooms. In the 1950s it was incorporated into the adjacent No. 7 High Street. 31 High Street 31old , detail 31 , 31 As far back as 1865 No31 has been a Chemist, in this year it belonged to Joseph Hunt Snell, in 1900 Edmund Dodge traded as a Chemist and Druggist until about the 1960's when a Mr H Hemmell was listed as taking over. In the1990’s it had become the Attic antique shop and now is a private house. In the 2nd picture you can see clearly No31. / 5 December, 2024

James Butcher a boat owner who lived there until 1883 succeeded him. 185-186-187 High Street 22 , CREDIT:Crispin Hook 22 , pic 130 years ago IF you had stood on the doorstep of No5 High St, you would have seen No185-186-187 the High Street, which can be seen in the picture on the right, was one of three houses in the Terrace which once stood in front of Park Terrace. In 1932 No185 was listed as a Florists operated by the Dye Brothers and by 1967 the building had become a Central Heating Shop run by Mr C. N. Scupham. / 5 December, 2024
150 High Street pic ,  c1890 563/7/8 Crown Hotel ,  2023 rear The 2nd picture was taken around the 1880's and shows the Stebbing's family standing outside the hotel, as well as the Crown and Anchor the Stebbing's owned a number of public houses in the town. During the 1990's the Hotel was taken over by the Scotts and operated a brewery in the old stable block at the rear, over the years landlords have come and gone. / 4 December, 2024

173 High Street red , ss 173 High Street No173 can be seen in the above picture as it was before it was torn down for the road widening. No173 was previously the Dolphin public house up to the 19th century but in 1865 Mrs Susannah Porter was shown as working from there as a Dress-maker. Once the building was rebuilt it belonged to a George Cooper in 1932 but the Kelly's Directory didn't say what the shop was. / 24 November, 2024
174 High Street red , dd 174 High Street After the block was rebuilt it had a few uses, but recorded in the 1920's and also in the picture above, the shop was K and L Bane which was recorded in an advert at the time as a Fancy Drapers. In 1932 as recorded in the Kelly's Directory the shop appears to have been taken over by Mrs. S. Copling who also ran it as a draper. / 24 November, 2024

32 High Street gg , pic gg , 32 No 32 appears to have always been a house, Tudor inside just like 31 next door. If you look at the roof line you can clearly see the Georgian frontage which has been added on later. In 1932 kelly' s directory lists a Mr John waiter Baron Endacott as living there, and in 1967 a Mr Ronald T Stevens. Today it is still a private house.  / 23 November, 2024
184 Belle Vue high street 20 , pic 20 , pic The Belle Vue was built in 1903 after the widening of the High Street and was located at the Northern end of the High Street at the junction of St Margaret's Road. Due to Jubilee Road going through, it was demolished in 1976/77 to make way for the road. listed in the Kelly's Directory of 1932 it has the landlord as Mr George. R. / 23 November, 2024

In 1865 the building was the home of Dr John Prentice who was a Surgeon in the town.
